Sergio Garcia has picked his favourite major championship, and surprisingly, it’s not the Masters Tournament at Augusta National.

Garcia is one of the greatest European golfers of all time, with 11 wins on the PGA Tour and 16 on the DP World Tour.

He’s also won the most points of any player in Ryder Cup history, scoring 28.5 across 10 appearances in the competition.

The Spaniard’s biggest career achievement to date, however, was his only major victory at the Masters in 2017.

Sergio Garcia names the Open his favourite major ahead of the Masters Tournament

Considering he won the Masters eight years ago, it’s fair for someone to assume that it’s Garcia’s favourite of the four majors.

That’s what Manchester United legend Gary Neville did in his interview with Garcia recently, except he was wrong.

The Masters champion explained: “No. Funnily enough, Gary, it’s not. I love the Masters. My favourite major is the Open. I’ve always loved the British Open Championship.

“I think, as a European, the Open is the one you always look up to because when I was growing up in Spain, you couldn’t really watch the Masters but you could watch the Open Championship.

“As a youngster, I played a lot in the UK and played those links courses and I’ve always loved them. I was fortunate enough to win the British Boys’ and then the British Amateur so it’s always been my favourite.

“I’ve obviously been very close to winning it several times. Unfortunately, it hasn’t happened yet, but it’s definitely the one that I’ve always loved the most.”

Sergio Garcia picks the most memorable moment from 2017 Masters victory

Garcia was then asked about the most memorable moment from his Masters win, where he beat Englishman Justin Rose in a playoff.

His answer was not the most obvious, like the winning putt or being handed the Green Jacket, instead going for one putt which proved to be crucial.

“I think there are several. Probably the one that stands out the most for me would be the eagle on 15 because of the energy I felt when I made that putt.

“To experience that at the Masters with a chance of winning the Green Jacket was an unbelievable feeling. You could see and feel the energy that was going around between the grandstands. That was really, really cool.”
