Several LIV Golf stars participated in the Spanish Open at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid last weekend, and there’s been movement in the world rankings.

Spaniard Angel Hidalgo clinched the title after a dramatic playoff victory over LIV Golf star Jon Rahm. The 2023 Masters winner was able to play the DP World Tour event after lodging an appeal before LIV Golf’s Team Championship in Chicago.

Rahm is reluctant to pay outstanding fines owed to the European authorities, which has jeopardized his Ryder Cup hopes.

The Spanish Open, however, was an opportunity for LIV Golf stars to boost their OWGR, and Rahm has benefited from this. Here, The Golfing Gazette takes a look at the latest movement after the event.

Jon Rahm – 15th to 13th

Rahm dropped in the OWGR after the Tour Championship at East Lake. LIV Golf events have yet to gain world ranking points, and some big names have fallen out of the top 50 as a result.

The Spaniard, however, has performed well in the majors, and after his second-place finish in Madrid, Rahm moved up two spots to 13th.

Patrick Reed – 149th to 138th

American Patrick Reed has fallen dramatically down the world ranking since his move to LIV Golf. As a result, the 34-year-old missed the 2024 US Open and Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Since moving to LIV, Reed has participated in several DP World Tour events in a bid to rise back up the rankings.

After finishing T10 at the Spanish Open, Reed gained eleven spots, moving from 149th to 138th.

Tommy Fleetwood – 12th to 11th

Tommy Fleetwood finished four shots back of the leaders at the Spanish Open and tied for third, and the Englishman has jumped one spot in the world rankings.

It’s been an excellent start to the Ryder Cup qualification year for Fleetwood as he looks to ensure his spot on Luke Donald’s team for the Bethpage Black event.
