Justin Thomas roared back to life at the RBC Heritage as he shot a brilliant round of ten under par to lead by three heading into round two.
With another stacked leaderboard behind him, Thomas was able to keep his cool and find form to shoot a course record-tying 61 and put himself three clear Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler.
For Thomas – who has not won on the PGA Tour since his 2022 PGA Championship success – getting that win will be a huge weight off his shoulders.
Thomas spoke of Rory McIlroy’s win motivating him at The Masters and he seems to have really heeded that in his opening round at Harbour Town.
And even more impressively, he’s now some five clear of his good friend Tiger Woods when it comes to one metric.

Justin Thomas out on his own as he goes low at The RBC Heritage
Shooting under 70 is normally a good score for any golfer so to shoot 61 and be 10 under par is really quite something from Justin Thomas.
However, this is now abnormal for him. In fact, he’s very much the man to look to when it comes to shooting low rounds.
In a stat shared by Justin Ray on X, Thomas is now well out in front on his own in terms of rounds of 62 or less in the last 40 years.
So much so, that he’s now five clear of Tiger Woods when it comes shooting 62 or below.
Justin Thomas’ best ever rounds on the PGA Tour
Shooting 62 or better a whopping 14 times is impressive stuff from Thomas and it makes it all the more surprising he’s not won in so long.
Thomas’ very best came with a 59 back in 2017 at The Sony Open, while he also shot a nine under par at the US Open the same year.
In fact, it was only at The Players this year that Thomas shot a 62 again, proving once more that he very much has it in the locker if he can find it.
If Thomas can keep his cool and keep playing as he is at Harbour Town, then that win might finally come.
