Torrey Pines showed its teeth on Thursday after severe winds saw the Farmers Insurance Open scoring average increase.

Overnight leader Ludvig Aberg, who looked in ominous form on Wednesday, carded a three-over 75 on the South Course. The Swede still holds a tie for the lead on six under. 36-year-old Lanto Griffin is also at six under after managing to shoot level par, one of the standout second-round scores.

Of those inside the top ten, Chris Gotterup’s four-under 69 on the North Course was the standout score.

After winds peaked at 22mph, officials opted to suspend play, a decision which angered some golf fans. During the 2024 Bermuda Butterfield Championship in the FedEx Cup Fall, play continued despite gusts reaching nearly 36mph.

Justin Thomas, however, has explained why the situation at Torrey Pines was very different.

Taking to X on Thursday evening, two-time major winner Thomas explained how the greens at Torrey Pines played a big part in the suspension.

“Bermuda was likely grainy, slower Bermuda greens vs Torrey, which has fast, severe Poa,” Thomas said.

“Same reason we play in 30-40 mph winds at the Open some days- bc greens are slower. Extremely tough to compare the two. Just my opinion.”

18 PGA Tour players now out of Farmers Insurance Open

After play was suspended on Thursday evening, six more players—including former winner Max Homa—withdrew from the Farmers Insurance, bringing the total number of withdrawals to 18. For some, the lightning-fast greens and gusty conditions may have influenced their decision.

What’s more, with the Genesis Invitational now reportedly set to be played at Torrey Pines, many PGA Tour players are now focusing their attention elsewhere during this busy part of their schedule.

This week’s event in San Diego is followed by the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach before the Tour heads to Scottsdale for the WM Phoenix Open. Hopefully, when the Genesis Invitational heads to Torrey, a much stronger field will take to the course.
