Justin Rose came agonisingly close to winning his second major championship title at the 2024 Open.
The Englishman pushed Xander Schauffele all the way at Royal Troon but watched on helplessly as the American finished two shots clear.
Magnanimous in defeat, Rose was full of praise for Schauffele and accepted that an exceptional performance had beaten him.
The Claret Jug remains a goal for Rose, and the 44-year-old’s major championship mentality could stand him in good stead heading into 2025.
Justin Rose’s ‘biggest advantage’ at major championships

Speaking in a recent video with journalist Dan Rapaport, Rose claimed the ‘old school’ conservative way of playing was something some of the PGA Tour’s younger stars should look to adopt during the majors.
“I still feel like I am a little old school,” Rose said. “The old fashion process of fairways and greens. I still think that serves me well. Even if the data says smash it, if you’re not inherently comfortable, the data can tell you whatever you want. If you are on the tee and there’s that little bit in your mind going, it just doesn’t feel right, and then it’s no longer a relevant statistic.
Rapaport replied: “Do you notice when you play with the younger guys, they tend to whack it a little bit more often?”
Rose added: “100%. I think it serves week-in and week-out tour golf really well, but it doesn’t play into major championship golf. I think my biggest advantage is still tougher golf courses where old-school strategy is still a really big part of it.”
Justin Rose’s 2024 major championship record
One only needs to take a brief look at Rose’s major record in 2024 to see that his comments do hold some weight.
His tied-sixth finish at the PGA Championship, and T2 at The Open demonstrate that there’s still a place for old-school tactics: find fairways and greens and avoid any significant mistakes.

Rose didn’t enjoy success at the US Open and Masters, however. The Englishman missed the cut at Augusta National after finishing seven over through his two rounds. At the US Open, Rose ended day two six over and didn’t feature during the weekend at Pinehurst No.2.
Looking ahead to 2025, Rose will undoubtedly be eyeing the Open Championship once more, which will take place at Royal Portrush in July.
