Englishman Justin Rose narrowly missed out on his first Open Championship title as Xander Schauffele ran out victorious after producing a stunning final round at Royal Troon.
The American’s 65 was too good and thoroughly deserving of lifting the Claret Jug come close of play on Sunday.
Rose, speaking after his final round, suggested that Schauffele is now at the same level as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
Golf fans around the world have also decided whether Schauffele has had a better season than the world number one after he won his second major championship title.
Justin Rose lauds four ‘weapons’ in Xander Schauffele’s game

Rose – unsurprisingly magnanimous in defeat – was quick to heap praise on Schauffele and highlighted four strengths of the American’s game.
“He has a lot of horsepower, do you know what I mean,” Rose told MyGolfSpy.
“In the sense of he’s good with a wedge, he’s great with a putter; he hits the ball a long way. Obviously, his iron play is strong.”
The 2013 US Open champion added: “So he’s got a lot of weapons out there. He’s got a lot of runway ahead and a lot of exciting stuff ahead, I’m sure.”
Xander Schauffele will fancy his FedEx Cup chances after Open Championship win
Schauffele has the chance to make Olympic history at Le Golf National before the race for the FedEx Cup takes centre stage.
Scheffler, of course, is in a commanding position heading into the end-of-the-season playoffs. Still, given Schauffele’s recent form and season to date, the diminutive American must be considered one of the main threats ahead of the PGA Tour finale.
As mentioned by Rose, Schauffele now hits the ball as far as most, putts at an elite level, and rarely makes a mistake. It’s a recipe for success, and it’s hard not to envisage the 30-year-old landing more major championship titles going forward.
The one negative for the American is that he now has to wait eight months to challenge for another major title. If the Masters were next month, he would no doubt be the favourite.
