Jordan Spieth’s withdrawal from The Travelers was a bitter blow for both him and the golfing community but there’s a wider problem he might have to deal with going forward.

The American has only just recovered from major wrist surgery and was hoping to get himself into some sort of form ahead of The Open and making a late push for the American Ryder Cup team.

However, a bitter blow has struck at The Travelers, with Spieth withdrawing with a back injury.

Spieth released a statement to say it was his scapula and upper back and neck that were having problems and he hoped to be fine soon enough.

However, while this injury issue might end up being a minor one, Spieth and fans around the world will be worried due to the nature.

Jordan Spieth will want to avoid a Tiger Woods scenario after latest injury blow

Everyone in golf knows about the issues Tiger Woods has had over the years and while some have been inflicted off the course in more recent times, his issues started originally with on-course matters.

While Woods initial problems were with his knee in 2008, from 2014 to 2024, the 15-time major winner has undergone six surgeries on his back.

In that time, he has never managed to find consistency in his game and in the modern day, those back injuries, coupled with the issues from a car crash, make it nigh on impossible for him to play four rounds in a PGA Tour event.

Of course, Jordan Spieth’s issue might not be as big as Tiger’s and with a bit of luck, no surgery is needed.

However, anyone in any sport will tell you how back problems can lead to other issues. And in golf, with so much reliance on the body turning and the walking that goes with it, as soon as the back problems start, they’re hard to get over.

Golfers who have been significantly impacted by injuries

While Tiger Woods is the standout name when it comes to golfers getting injured, there are plenty of other names in there as well who’ve suffered.

Ben Hogan is the big one, after suffering a car accident and somehow coming back to be a winner on TOUR.

In the modern game, a number of players have struggled with differing issues.

Jason Day is one of the players who has struggled with back problems and until this weekend at The Travelers, he’s looked nowhere near the level he did in 2015 when he won a major.

Likewise, Will Zalatoris is a player who has had a wretched few years. Again, a back problem has hindered Zalatoris, who doesn’t look anywhere near getting back to golf anytime soon.

Hideki Matsuyama and Patrick Cantlay have also had issues, while even Xander Schauffele has suffered with a rib and back problem in recent times.

For Jordan Spieth, then, the mental worry of this becoming a problem will be on his mind.

If it is an ongoing issue, then we might well have seen the best of Spieth.
