Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler are both in contention to win the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village this week.

Scheffler shot a second consecutive round of two-under-par 70 at the Memorial Tournament to trail leaders Ben Griffin and Nick Taylor by three shots.

Meanwhile, Spieth carded an impressive round of three-under-par 69 to leave him four back.

Spieth said before the Memorial that he can get back to number one in the world, and he proved on Friday that he still has what it takes to contend in the biggest golf tournaments.

Scheffler is the current world number one, and if truth be told, he’s on another level entirely to Spieth right now.

He is not only an exceptionally good golfer, but he is remarkably consistent as well. Scheffler has now made 56 consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour.

And something Spieth said after Friday’s round at Jack’s Place proved just how good the 28-year-old really is.

Spieth was clearly delighted with his round of 69 on day two of the Memorial.

He beat Scheffler’s score by one, but the world number one had to deal with a lot worse weather.

Scheffler admitted that he had some terrible lies out there on day two, when speaking to the press after his round.

When speaking to reporters, Spieth admitted that those who went out late had a big advantage on Friday.

He said, I played really, really well. I didn’t make anything to start, and then I got a birdie to drop on 7, and then I made a nice par save on 8 and it felt like the lid came off and I putted well from there. But, yeah, I was 1-over through 6 and I had missed one green and only had one birdie putt outside of 15 feet. So it was a really good ball-striking round. Then when the rain stopped, I was able to take advantage coming in. It was really nice going off later today because when that stopped on — what was that, 8 or so, 7? It was a big difference. It wasn’t a heavy rain, but it was just annoying and it was heavy for those guys that went off pretty early.

So in a nice place. It’s nice because this course, you can’t fake it. It tells you where you are. I’ve been feeling like I’ve been pretty close, and I just want to stay the course, and it’s nice to get rewarded the last couple holes there with some really nice shots, looking at the weekend with some heavy wind tomorrow, and know that I have a chance.

Scottie Scheffler’s stats during first two rounds at the Memorial Tournament

The guys who teed off in the morning wave on Friday had to deal with heavier and more constant rain than the afternoon wave did.

However, as per usual, Scheffler managed to score incredibly well, given the circumstances.

Here is his statistical breakdown after two rounds at Muirfield Village.

PGA Tour statistical categoriesScheffler’s rank after two rounds at Memorial
Strokes gained off the tee11th
Strokes gained approach6th
Strokes gained around the green8th
Strokes gained putting48th

Scheffler will undoubtedly ramp up those numbers on Saturday and make a real push for the lead.

If a few more putts inside eight feet would have dropped for him on Friday, he would be leading the golf tournament now.

Spieth’s comments on Friday evening after a tough day two at the Memorial Tournament proved just how good Scheffler is.

And golf fans are expecting the world number one to prove exactly that on Saturday.
