When you think of Scottie Scheffler, you think of a clean score card with minimal mistakes so when he goes out and makes a double bogey, you have to sit up and take notice.

Scheffler is usually so consistent with his play that while he makes bogeys as regular as any other PGA Tour player, making double is more of a rarity.

Indeed, up until the PGA Championship this month, Scheffler had never even made a single double in the opening round of a major, such was his ability to get up and down and scramble.

However, at The Memorial on day two, Scheffler managed to get a six on the par four tenth after finding a grim lie from his tee shot.

And after proving to all golf fans he is human after all, Scheffler explained afterwards just how hard a position he found himself in.

Scottie Scheffler says why he made double bogey on hole ten at The Memorial

Speaking to the media after his second round of 70 to put him within three of the leader, Scheffler was asked about just how bad the rough was, and in particular, the tricky situation he found himself in on hole ten when he made a rare double bogey.

“Just a terrible lie. If there was more rough in front of me, I would have maybe tried to hit, like, an 8-iron or something, hack it down the fairway, but it felt like it was worth the risk to try and pop it out of there with the 5-wood. The worst that was going to happen was the ball was going to end up where it did,” Scheffler admitted.

Asked just how tough the conditions out at Muirfield were in general, Scheffler admitted it was a tough test and realistically, you have to keep the ball on the fairway to have any chance.

“Yeah, I mean, the golf course is playing really long. It’s a very challenging golf course,” he continued.

“When the rough gets this wet, any time you hit it in the rough, the lies are going to be really bad and it’s going to be really challenging. So it’s definitely important to keep the ball in play and try and stay dry.”

How many double bogeys Scottie Scheffler has in his career

If you’re world number one, then you aren’t going to be consistently making double bogey or worse and Scottie Scheffler does a good job of keeping them off his cards.

Indeed, in the 130 events he’s played, he’s only had 90 doubles (Statmuse). Given that’s at least 4680 holes of golf if he just played the opening two rounds of any bog standard tournament, then that is impressive.

Add to that he’s made the cut in 122 events, and it’s even more impressive.

As a comparison, Rory McIlroy has made 224 bogeys in 270+ events, while a player such as Sam Burns, who has played not too many more events than Scheffler, already has 163 doubles to his name.

With Scheffler still below the 100 mark, it very much seems it’s a key reason why he is always on top, despite the small blip today.
