You would imagine a golfer who has won two majors and more than 20 PGA Tour events would be adept at hitting any club but for Dustin Johnson, there’s one club in his bag he just can’t get on with.
Johnson won the US Open in 2016 and then The Masters in 2020 before moving over to the LIV Golf tour in a big-money move.
Despite being woefully out of form on LIV and in the majors in recent times, Johnson will still go down as a great of the modern era.
However, while he will always have that status, it seems Johnson can also relate to the average golfer and he’s admitted that with one club, he just doesn’t enjoy hitting it.

Dustin Johnson names the golf club he really dislikes using
Johnson was taking part in a drill for Golf Digest on YouTube and was offering his take on various distances and how to hit clubs in his bag.
However, when it came to hitting one just under 300 yards, Johnson admitted that while it might be a 3-wood for him, he simply doesn’t get on with the club.
“I mean if you miss with 3-wood…I mean to me, the 3-wood is probably my least favourite. I just never really liked 3-wood,” Johnson admitted.
“Off the tee is fine, I’ll hit it off the tee. But just hitting them off the ground…man…if you don’t hit them like spot on, then they just go everywhere.”
Dustin Johnson’s average distances with each club
The modern day golfer is set up to hit the ball a mile and Dustin Johnson was one of the very first to start consistently hitting his driver north of 330 yards.
Indeed, despite being out of form, that distance has never left him really and remains a staple of his game.
| Club | Average distance (yards) |
| Driver | 312 |
| 3-wood | 282 |
| 5-wood | 267 |
| 2-iron | 261 |
| 4-iron | 236 |
| 5-iron | 225 |
| 6-iron | 212 |
| 7-iron | 200 |
| 8-iron | 186 |
| 9-iron | 172 |
| PW | 158 |
Obviously, distance isn’t always everything in golf as we’ve seen multiple players prove over the years.
However, for a player like DJ, especially when he was in his prime on the PGA Tour, it definitely helped and the sheer fact he could hit a wedge just short of 160 yards is pretty impressive.
