Two-time major winner Jordan Spieth is off to a positive start at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Spieth posted a three-under 68 on what was a challenging TPC Scottsdale layout. The American birdied 13, 15 and 17 on his opening nine before picking up one more shot on the sixth.
Spieth made his first start of 2025 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and ended the week level-par after shooting five-under on Sunday. Spieth says he is now pain-free after undergoing wrist surgery, and his first round in Phoenix certainly provides optimism.
Some impressive work on the greens underpinned the 31-year-old’s first 18 – and Spieth revealed in his post-round media duties that he has a new putter in the bag.

“I’m just kind of messing with some — I’ve got a few options, just trying to mess a little with how it sits on the ground, the draft on the bottom of the putter, see if I can get it to where it sets aligning a little better and off the ball is a little bit smoother. I may use a few options this week. I may stick with the one I did today. We’ll see,” Spieth said.
The 2015 Masters champ added: “I used a mallet-style putter in 2017, and then I threatened last year when I was –, but I never ended up using a different putter, but I was trying out a few different options, different heads and stuff like that. I’m just trying to figure out what helps me stroke it the best, and I’ll use that one.”
Where is Jordan Spieth’s new putter from?
The flat stick Spieth is using this week isn’t new. The three-time major winner revealed it’s a model he has had for a long time.
“I’ve had it for a long time. I’ve had putters sent my way,” Spieth added.
“It’s a TP Mills, and it’s just one that I had so much time off; I just messed with everything in my basement and decided to bring a few putters out here and used my gamer last week. I used that one today. I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to do from here.”
Jordan Spieth’s putting stats from day one of WM Phoenix Open
Spieth is currently 35th in the Waste Management field for strokes gained putting. The American picked up 0.8 strokes whilst on the greens. Spieth also made 93ft of putts, which was 25th in the field.
One aspect of Spieth’s game that stood out was his approach play. The 31-year-old was 16th in strokes gained approach and eighth in GIR.
Considering the concern about his wrist, the fact that he is looking comfortable with his irons is a massive bonus.
