Jon Rahm is one of the two biggest stars on LIV Golf, alongside Bryson DeChambeau, so whenever he speaks, the Saudi-backed league’s powers that be will undoubtedly be taking notice.

Rahm has been incredibly solid on LIV Golf this season, but amazingly, he is still without a win in 2025.

The Spaniard has cut a frustrated figure on LIV this year, although he has repeatedly insisted that he is more than happy with life on the Saudi-backed golf league.

Interestingly, it has been claimed that Rahm is pushing for LIV to switch to 72-hole tournaments.

Rahm recently suggested that he has improved as a player on LIV, and while that is debatable, he is unquestionably one of the best players in the world when he’s on form.

So it stands to reason that the LIV hierarchy will be keen to make any changes that might make the 30-year-old even happier.

In order to stand a better chance of gaining ranking points, LIV will probably have to switch to 72-hole tournaments while introducing a halfway cut.

Now Rahm has offered his opinion on whether LIV could introduce cuts.

Rahm was asked what changes he would make in order to make LIV more likely to receive world ranking points.

He said: I think the way I see it, at least right now, there’s a process to hopefully enter those world ranking points and at least get our foot in the door, and then once we’re allowed, we can see what changes can be made to earn as many as possible, keeping the integrity of what LIV Golf is about.

Examples of that would be, let’s say with whatever we’re doing currently we get 20 points. If you add a fourth round, you go to 25. Is that worth it, is that not worth it. If you add a cut, things like that. Right now with as little players as we have, I don’t see a cut working very well, and with the teams I think it would be a little odd.

But if the league were to expand and let’s say you go to 15 teams, you have 60 players, now you can actually possibly make something work.

There’s many possibilities that I can think of. By the way, this is completely hypothetical because I haven’t spoken to anybody about it, but there’s things we could do I think to add more world rankings points if we need it, and I’m sure there’s more that I can’t think of that the folks at OWGR and maybe Scott or the front of the LIV office can probably tell us about to give us a little bit more of strength of field.

Jon Rahm needs LIV to change to 72-hole tournaments

Rahm has failed to genuinely contend at a major championship since joining LIV at the end of 2023.

The Spaniard has three top-10s to his name in eight major starts since he left the PGA Tour, and it could be argued that the LIV schedule is not conducive with their players succeeding at the four biggest tournaments in the game.

72-hole tournaments would help better prepare Rahm and co for the majors.

LIV should also consider adding a links event to their calendar before The Open Championship.

The bottom line is that LIV Golf definitely needs to make some changes in order to improve their product and make life easier for their top players.

Rahm would definitely benefit from playing tournaments with four rounds and a halfway cut because naturally, it would increase the competitive edge at each and every event.
