Jon Rahm reveals what he does differently with his golf balls only at the Ryder Cup, he ‘can’t’ keep them the same

Jon Rahm has revealed that he makes an interesting change to his golf balls at the Ryder Cup.

Rahm has made three Ryder Cup appearances in his career so far, and he’s arguably been Europe’s best player in the last two.

He will struggle to qualify for Bethpage Black later this year, due to his LIV Golf ties, but team captain Luke Donald will surely pick him.

Here’s what Rahm will do his his golf balls if he’s teeing it up for the European team later this year.

What Jon Rahm changes about his golf balls for Ryder Cups

Every club in Rahm’s golf bag, besides his Odyssey putter, was produced by his main sponsor, Callaway.

The Spaniard also uses Callaway Chrome Soft X golf balls, no matter which tournament he’s playing in, even the Ryder Cup.

He does feel the need to change one thing about his ball when representing team Europe, which doesn’t affect his performance but just highlights his passion for the event.

Rahm explained: “When you don’t have people watching or rule officials everywhere, it’s very easy to cheat if you want to. I’ve seen people do it. I think a lot of people have done it, in a more or less impactful way. A little bit of bending the rules, I think, a lot of people have done.

“Once I had a ball which I thought was mine, and it was just let’s say Callaway 3, no markings, and they were like, ‘Well, there are probably 10,000 balls like this one lost around the golf course, how do we know it’s yours?’

“A friend of mine’s initials were MG, and he used to do it with a blue marker. I was like, well, I’m going to copy that and do the JR in red. I’m always going to know that’s me.

“My favorite color has always been red. The only time I’ve changed it is the Ryder Cup. I can’t be doing red, so it’s blue.”

Rahm’s Ryder Cup record is seriously good, even though it started slowly with just one point in his debut at Le Golf National in 2018.

The 30-year-old played in all five sessions at Whistling Straits in 2021 and, while Europe lost to the United States, he did himself proud with three victories and one draw.

Rahm scored three points at Marco Simone Golf Club most recently, going undefeated as Donald’s team thrashed the Americans.

Alongside Rory McIlroy, he’s one of Europe’s biggest leaders and will almost certainly be on the plane to New York in September, regardless of form.
