Jon Rahm and Tiger Woods were involved in a classic match during the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National.

The Spaniard would eventually edge a back-and-forth affair on the 17th hole and add another point to the European Team’s total.

After holing the winning putt on the penultimate hole, Rahm let out a burst of emotion and almost forgot to shake Woods’ hand. Thankfully, the 15-time major winner was gracious in defeat.

Speaking about the event, Rahm has since revealed the seven words Woods said to him after the winning moment.

“Then, on the last putt, right before I hit it, somebody in Spanish yelled, “Do it for Seve!” at the top of his lungs,” Rahm revealed. “Knowing how much Seve means to me, having the 5-footer to beat Tiger Woods, earning the first full point for the Europeans when it was looking kind of dark – there was a lot going on in my mind.

“When I turned around, I had to apologise because I didn’t see he was coming to me, and he came to me with a smile. He said, ‘Man, don’t even worry, you played great.’ I started crying in front of Tiger … it was such an emotional moment.”

Rahm added: “I saw him win a great deal of events, grew up with a dream of someday beating him, and to do it on the Sunday of a Ryder Cup – it was extremely special. There’s not many things that are going to be better than that in golf for me.”

Jon Rahm on track to make 2025 Ryder Cup team

Woods’ Ryder Cup playing days appear to be behind him. The all-time great has struggled with injury issues in recent years and seems to be focusing all his attention on playing solely in the major championships.

Rahm, however, is on course to represent Europe at the 2025 event. Rahm will play at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, which will help the LIV star maintain his DP World Tour membership for the 2025 season.

Rahm currently owes $1m in fines to the Wentworth-based authorities, but with the DP World Tour reportedly in talks with the PIF, there’s a chance the Spaniard’s fines may be cleared.

There’s no doubt Luke Donald will be eager for the two-time major winner to play a part at Bethpage Black as Europe look for a first win on US soil in 12 years.
