Jon Rahm excited to play new tournament in 2025 which could have big implications for his Ryder Cup chances

Jon Rahm continues to divide opinion in the golfing world, with many fans still upset about his mega-money move to LIV Golf.

Rahm has gone on to win the LIV Golf individual championship, but his presence on the PIF-funded tour has caused complications with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.

The DP World Tour were angered by Rahm after he decided against playing at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

He is perhaps still aggrieved at the fines received for participating in LIV Golf, with the Spaniard appealing the sanctions.

Despite the ongoing issue, Rahm is eligible to play in the 2025 Ryder Cup, having taken part in four DP World Tour events this season.

And the two-time major champion has just confirmed his presence on another for next year, with Rahm making his debut at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Emirates Golf Club plays host to the event in mid-January, with Rahm telling the DP World Tour: “This is an event that I have heard a lot about and I am looking forward to making my Hero Dubai Desert Classic debut in January.

“I have had a lot of success in Dubai in the past so it’s a place that holds a lot of good memories for me, and it will be great to get back there.”

Rahm certainly enjoys playing in Dubai, having emerged victorious at the DP World Tour Championship in 2017, 2019 and 2022, topping the Race to Dubai rankings in 2019.

The Spaniard, a 10-time DP World Tour winner, will be joined by fellow Europeans Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy, with the latter the defending champion.

The Rolex Series event is worth $9million, but Rahm is perhaps more concerned about his Ryder Cup availability with the decision to play at the tournament.

He fulfilled his requirement this year by playing at the Olympcis, Open de Espana, Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Andalucia Masters, and is clearly keen to start 2025 on the right foot.

It is, of course, a Ryder Cup year, with the Europeans looking to defend their title at Bethpage Black in September.

Ian Poulter says Europe need Rahm at the Ryder Cup, with his fellow LIV Golf star Tyrrell Hatton in the same position.

After being upset with the Spaniard, the DP World Tour will be delighted that the Ryder Cup icon is heading to Dubai.
