Jon Rahm showed his class on day three of the PGA Championship to get in contention to win and he’s admitted that he even impressed himself at one point in his round.
Rahm shot an impressive round of four-under par to move to six-under for the tournament. He still finds himself five behind Scottie Scheffler, but he is at least in with a shot on Sunday.
For Rahm, proving himself at the majors will feel like a big goal this year. His form has been excellent since moving to LIV Golf but question marks remain over the LIV players and whether they can produce when it matters.
Rahm, then, is flying the LIV flag and if he plays well on Sunday, he could well win a third major.
Indeed, such was the impressiveness of Rahm’s third round, that he believes he played one of the best shots of his life.

Jon Rahm names the shot which was pretty much perfect in round three of the PGA Championship
Speaking to Sky Sports immediately after his round, Rahm was going through his round shot by shot and got onto his stunning approach on the 16th.
Rahm hit a nine iron to within a couple of feet before tapping in for birdie.
And according to Rahm, it’s one of the best shots he’s hit in the last five years.
“For a nine-iron that might be one the best swings I’ve made in the last four or five years,” Rahm admitted.
“You know, you see my reaction, it was pretty much absolute perfection. The line, the ball flight, the landing spot, I couldn’t have hit that shot any better.”
When asked to elaborate, Rahm tried to explain further just why it was so good.
“Despite the ball flight, the trajectory, the swing, the way the line started, the way it flew, the only thing it could have done more was go in but I think that was asking too much.”
Golf needs Jon Rahm playing well at the majors
Whatever you think of the LIV and PGA split, golf is better when the best players in the world share the same course and we are seeing that again this week.
Crucially though, if LIV and the PGA are to remain two separate entities, then we need players like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau to produce in the majors.
Right now, we are seeing those two players very much carry the burden for LIV but when they play well, it does add that extra bit of intrigue.
Even for the players, it adds an element of us vs them, which in the end, is what sport is all about.
It’s good to see Rahm back on form and if he can start fast at Quail Hollow in round four, he might just cause Scheffler to at least worry.
