J.J. Spaun is in contention already at the Procore Championship and ahead of the Ryder Cup, he’s admitted two of his teammates impress him with their putting.
Spaun himself has had a fine season and he made a monster putt at the US Open to seal the deal and write his name into the record books and in doing so, secure a place on the Ryder Cup team.
The American has enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2025 and going into Bethpage Black, he might well end up being a wildcard for Team USA.
Still, for Spaun to contribute he needs to putt well and if that’s the case, he might want to bend the ear of two teammates.
In fact, speaking to the press after his round of 67 at the Procore on day one, Spaun admitted to two of his new teammates really impress him.

Sam Burns and Russell Henley impress J.J. Spaun with their putting
Speaking to the press after his opening round, Spaun knew it was only a matter of time before attention turned to others and the Ryder Cup.
Indeed, after Scottie Scheffler praised Sam Burns’ putting, Spaun was asked the same question but this time, he chose to throw Russell Henley’s name in the mix too.
Yeah, he’s [Burns] obviously a really great putter, Russell’s a really great putter. I think they’re just very deliberate in their routines and their deliveries. They’ve got a good tempo like with routine, they don’t kind of second guess, they kind of pick their spots and go,” Spaun explained.
“But I think the thing with those great of putters is just how often the ball goes in the hole and that just kind of breeds more putts going in. So that’s kind of what they do.”
Adding further comment on how good Burns is, Spaun commented further.
“Yeah, totally. He knows he’s going to start the ball online, he knows he’s going to have good speed, it’s just whether it goes in or not.”

Russell Henley and Sam Burns’ putting in 2025
Sam Burns is widely known as one of the best on the PGA Tour with the putter.
Henley, too, is steady but when it comes to the stats, there is no comparison.
| Metric | Burns/Henley |
| One putt percentage | 12th/62nd |
| SG putting | 1st/32nd |
| Putts per round | 4th/57th |
| 3 putt avoidance | 2nd/52nd |
| Total putting | 2nd/64th |
Clearly, things could be much better for Henley but that room for improvement will make him a scary proposition if he does manage to get the flatstick going.
Whether or not pressure will play a part at Bethpage, remains to be seen. But America needs both these studs playing well and if they don’t, it’s going to feel like a long old week.
