The US Ryder Cup team are up and running as they play the Procore Championship and Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns are among two of those trying to make a splash.
World number one Scheffler is hoping to keep his consistency up but an opening round of minus two seemed a bit clumsy for a player of his calibre.
Likewise, his good friend Sam Burns was down in T51 at one-under, as the American duo struggled to really get going.

Nevertheless, there is more to this week than just playing good golf and for Team USA, it’s about forming a bond and team spirit ahead of Bethpage Black.
And doing media duties after day one, Scottie Scheffler was very much in the mood to give out some love to teammates.

Scottie Scheffler praises Sam Burns after round one of the Procore Championship
Speaking to the media after his opening round of 70 put him down in T38, Scheffler was asked about his good friend Sam Burns.
And as expected, Scheffler was full of praise for his old friend.
“Yeah, I mean, Sam’s a great guy. He’s a great person off the course, he’s extremely competitive on the course. He’s a guy I’ve known since junior golf, I’ve known him for a long time. We’ve had a relationship for quite a while and been good buddies. We were good buddies in junior golf and we’re still good buddies to this day,” Scheffler commented.
Going into how good Burns is with the putter, Scheffler admitted it’s impressive to see.
“I think mentally he’s really tough. I think he does a really good job of staying free and loose while he’s putting. He does his little Aim Point stuff, he does it very quick and he kind of gets an idea where he wants to, and then it’s like everything else shuts off and he just hits it. It’s pretty impressive,” he continued.
“I’ve talked to him about it numerous times, the way he does it. And that’s kind of something that’s helped my putting as well, trying to become more athletic, be more visual and that’s something that he does really well.”
| Event | Points won | Overall record |
| 2022 Presidents Cup | 1 | 0-3-2 |
| 2023 Ryder Cup | 1 | 1-2-0 |
| 2024 Presidents Cup | 3.5 | 3-0-1 |
| Total | 5.5 | 4-5-3 |
Asked whether he can learn something from Burns with his putting, Scheffler suggested it’s the same for every player out there.
“Well, I think we all can learn from each other out here. Just because you’re good at one thing doesn’t mean you can’t learn from somebody else. I feel like I’m always trying to learn little bits and pieces from guys when they’ll give up some information.”
Sam Burns’ impressive putting in 2025
It’s no secret on the PGA Tour that Sam Burns is one of the strongest putters out there.
He ranks first in strokes gained putting, first for making putts inside 10 feet, and excels in other metrics as well.
| Metric | Ranking |
| One putt percentage | 12th |
| SG putting | 1st |
| Putts per round | 4th |
| 3 putt avoidance | 2nd |
| Total putting | 2nd |
The problem Burns has had is the rest of his game can sometimes let him down and that’s where the improvement needs to come if he’s to win big in the future.
As Scheffler says, the players can learn a lot from each other and Burns would do well to tap into the world number one as often as he can.
