Five-time major winner Brooks Koepka has been linked with a return to the PGA Tour after Fred Couples detailed private conversations he’s shared with the LIV Golf star.

Couples claimed Koepka wants to return to the PGA Tour as talks between Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the Tour hierarchy continue.

“He wants to come back. I will say that I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour,” Couples told Golfweek.

Koepka was one of LIV’s biggest signings back in 2022, and the American made his debut at the Portland event. Bryson DeChambeau also made his first LIV appearance at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

Many of those who signed for LIV were open and honest about their reasoning, and Koepka was straight to the point when discussing the details of his contract with YouTube phenomenon Jake Paul.

In 2023, Koepka appeared on Paul’s podcast and revealed that he had agreed to a nine-figure contract with LIV.

Koepka said: “It was nine. It was pretty good. I was pretty happy with that one!

“A lot of it started with Phil Mickelson. He was big on the rights, owning his own rights. It’s tough, right? As players, we never get to capture our own moments. The Tour owns it, or the league owns it. That was his big gripe.”

The former world number one then detailed his reasoning for accepting an offer from the Saudi-backed league.

“I am going to be honest with you; I signed for the dough,” Koepka said.

“I am 100% behind that. I don’t know tomorrow, I could go get into a car accident and never play golf again, but my family is taken care of, and that was a big thing for me. Not doing it for anything else.

“Everybody else, they go to their 9-5. Most of them don’t like their 9-5, but they are doing it because they get their pay cheque. That’s the same thing as us.”

Could Brooks Koepka return to the PGA Tour?

Couples’ comments on Koepka come as the reunification of professional golf is firmly in the headlines.

Donald Trump’s meeting with Adam Scott and Jay Monahan provided optimism that an agreement could soon be reached. What’s more, PIF chief Yasir Al-Rumayyan also headed to the White House to meet with Trump and the Tour’s hierarchy.

There is light at the end of the tunnel after 19 months of uncertainty since the framework agreement was announced. Golf Channel reported Rex Hoggard even suggested LIV golfers could feature at the 2025 Players Championship. However, such an eventuality feels far-fetched.

One former LIV player will be in the field at TPC Sawgrass, though. Laurie Canter is now inside the world’s top 50 and will become the first former LIV golfer to play a PGA Tour-sanctioned event just over 12 months since he last played in the PIF-backed league.
