How fast the greens at the US Open are running as golfers warned ‘they knew what Oakmont was’ when they signed up

The US Open at Oakmont Country Club is the next major on the schedule for golf’s best and they’ve been warned of the significant challenge coming their way.

There is already a wide expectation that Oakmont is going to play tough and depending on conditions, we could well see some big scores.

Indeed, Brandt Snedeker has already warned players what to expect, while Justin Rose fired a warning to the big hitters when discussing it this weekend at The Memorial.

And if the players taking part needed any more warning, it’s now come directly from USGA managing director, Jeff Hall.

PGA Tour players told what to expect from the greens at Oakmont

US Open is always the event on the calendar that has the quickest greens and it goes without saying that players know full well it’s coming.

However, in a more direct warning to golf’s finest, the USGA’s Jeff Hill has admitted that the course is going to be purposely set up tough.

“The greens we will present next week will be very, very fast. We will play the majority of our golf in the mid/upper 14s, but that’s what Oakmont is all about,” he said.

“It’s been that way forever. I gather there was a near work-stop at the 35 Open because the greens were so fast in some players’ minds. This is what Oakmont is, and I hasten to say but when these players filed entries for the championship, they knew what Oakmont was.

“There’s no surprises here, there’ll be plenty of rough, challenging bunkers, putting greens that are fast and firm and we can’t wait to present it.”

Oakmont could be faster than Augusta National

Anyone who watches golf knows that Augusta National is normally the place for the fastest greens.

The undulating surfaces and slick greens at The Masters can often cause chaos but it seems that Oakmont might end up outdoing it.

With Hill himself here suggesting the greens could be running at around 14, that means they’re going to be quicker than the usual 11-12 we see at Augusta.

In a nutshell, if the players don’t bring their A-game, then they’re going to struggle and it’s going to be a long week.
