Rory McIlroy has a point to prove at the BMW Championship after finishing T68 at the St Jude Championship.
McIlroy ‘loves’ the FedExCup Playoff format, with the Northern Irishman currently fifth in the total points list.
He is behind the likes of American duo Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, while McIlroy labelled leader Scottie Scheffler ‘amazing’.
Scheffler tops the pile heading into the BMW Championship, with St Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama also in the top five.
McIlroy had a nightmare few days in Memphis, having started the event off brightly with an opening round 68.
How far is Rory McIlroy driving at the BMW Championship?
But that was followed by rounds of 73, 74 and 74 as he fell way down the standings to end on nine over par.
He has, however, been looking sharp with his driver after playing a practice round at Castle Pines for the BMW Championship.
TaylorMade Golf has shared footage of the round on X, with McIlroy enjoying plenty of carry with his drives at 6,400 feet of elevation.
One drive had a 371 yard carry, finishing at 378 yards, with another carrying 347 yards and finishing with a total of 362 yards.
And another of his longest drives at Castle Pines had a carry of 341 yards, with the ball flying 352 yards in total.
Rory McIlroy clears fence in BMW Championship range session
McIlroy should be eager to put his St Jude Championship disappointment behind him as soon as possible.
And he certainly looks comfortable at Castle Pines, where his long drives could help him enjoy a successful tournament.
CBS journalist Romi Bean shared footage of McIlroy driving over the fence on the range, while Dan Rapaport wrote on X that: ‘Rory was flying his high-bomb driver around 390 today on the launch monitor.’
The world number three does, however, need to remain focused on other areas of his game, with his putting having let him down in recent tournaments.
McIlroy has a long way to go to catch Scheffler and win yet another FedExCup title, but he won’t have given up just yet.
