‘Horrific’…Rory McIlroy says he was so glad 33-year-old didn’t win the Masters last year

The latest series of Full Swing is out on Netflix and golf superstar Rory McIlroy has had plenty to say for himself in the show.

The first series of Full Swing aired last year and was one of the most explosive pieces of golf content we’ve seen for some time.

This time around, McIlroy plays a more central part and amid all the talk of the LIV and PGA Tours over the last few years, there was plenty for McIlroy to get his teeth into.

One of the topics of discussion for McIlroy was the 2023 Masters. In the end, despite being billed as one of the favourites, McIlroy played poorly and Jon Rahm was the eventual winner at Augusta.

However, while Rahm got it over the line, McIlroy has revealed that he was happy to see old adversary Brooks Koepka not take home the green jacket.

“I was relieved that Brooks didn’t go to five major titles and I was still stuck with four, but at the same time, it would be dealing with the LIV bots and the media and all that stuff is what would have been absolutely horrific,” McIlroy said on Full Swing.

There was possibly an element of tongue-in-cheek about this from McIlroy but it also showed the competitor in him.

Obviously, since those comments, Koepka actually went on to add that 5th major by winning his third PGA Championship in 2023.

The duo are actually quite close off the course. They played a practice round together in the 23 Masters – much to the delight of the onlooking media – and Koepka himself has recently admitted McIlroy is one of the best players ever and that he is someone he always goes out to try and beat.

With the 2024 Masters now around the corner, McIlroy’s name will once again be mentioned as a potential winner. Koepka, though, cannot be discounted either.
