‘One of the best players ever’…Brooks Koepka says he tries to ‘one up’ 34-year-old in every golf major

Brooks Koepka has been giving a bit of an insight into his life in and outside of golf and had some kind words for Rory McIlroy in doing so.

Koepka is one of the big stars currently not playing on the PGA Tour having moved over to LIV Golf.

The USA star is one of the games biggest names and his move to LIV was seen as a blow to the PGA when it happened. Koepka has won five majors, with only Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson ahead of him in terms of active players on that front.

Of course, not too far behind is Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman is on four and needs a win at The Masters to complete a career Grand Slam.

Speaking about McIlroy to Golf.com, Koepka was asked who he’d pick if he had to choose one golfer to play with or against for the rest of his life.

And for the American, McIlroy is the standout candidate due to how he drives everyone else on.

“Rory. I feel like, maybe, there’s a competition that – I’m sure he’s that way as well – and he’s going to get to five soon and it’s like, a one up thing. We’re the same age, he’s maybe a year older but where we are in the game it’s just for me, I want to try and be a little bit better than him because I think he’s arguably one of the best players ever. So it’s just trying to one up, that’s how it feels for me anyway. I know if I show up at a major, I want to make sure I get a big enough lead before he shows up and starts closing in,” Koepka said.

McIlroy might well get the chance to play alongside or against Koepka more in the future.

Despite being on separate tours right now, talk of a world golf tour continues and both Koepka and McIlroy would surely be part of such a tour.
