It has not been a good week to be a driver in the bag of Rory McIlroy at the BMW Championship.
Rory McIlroy definitely appears to be one player who is ready to see the back of this season, with the problems really beginning on those final few holes at the US Open as he failed to get across the line in agonising circumstances at Pinehurst.
The Northern Irishman then missed the cut at The Open Championship despite a bright week at the Scottish Open before that. Nevertheless, McIlroy suggested that he was reasonably happy with his season ahead of the St Jude Championship.

McIlroy was right towards the bottom of the leaderboard in Memphis, and he was all but guaranteed of being in a decent position at The Tour Championship. However, that did not appear to free up the 35-year-old during the BMW Championship.
McIlroy came in for criticism after throwing his driver on Friday at Castle Pines, and a similar event happened during the final round.
McIlroy left the teeing ground on nine on Sunday with his driver in two pieces after narrowly avoiding the hazard. Replays showed that he had snapped the driver shaft while on his way down to collect his tee. Of course, anyone who has played the game knows that picking up the tee while resting on the club is not particularly challenging. So unless McIlroy had a faulty club, it is likely that he was well aware of what was about to happen.
A player waiting for the season to end
Funnily enough, he actually went on to make par on the ninth, producing a really impressive approach while his feet were in the water. However, his actions came back to haunt him shortly after as he hit a wayward tee shot on 10 with his three wood and ended up making a bogey.
Unsurprisingly, there was little sympathy from golf fans on social media for McIlroy who, from the outside, just appears to need a break from the game as soon as possible…
