The 2024 LIV Golf season concludes in Dallas this weekend, and golf fans are excited about what the league has done ahead of the Team Championship.
The LIV Golf Team Championship will use a match-play format after Jon Rahm added $22 million to his season earnings at last week’s individual finale.
Ahead of the event at Maridoe Golf Club, the top three teams after LIV Golf Chicago receive a bye and head straight into the semi-finals.
The remaining ten teams will compete in the quarter-finals. Seeds four through seven choose their opponent for the first day of team match play. Each match-up competes for three points, two singles – worth one point each – and one foursome, which is also worth a point.
The team that wins two of the three points moves on to the semi-finals, where seeds one, two, and three choose their opponent. The semi-finals follow the same format as the quarters.
Finally, the four semi-final winners advance to Sunday’s stroke play event, where all four scores count to determine the Team Championship winner.
And ahead of Friday’s first round, golf fans are excited about the unique format.
Golf fans react to LIV Golf’s Team Championship format

LIV often comes under scrutiny from traditional golf fans, but the response to the innovative team format has been largely positive.
“It’s better than the Ryder Cup and Super Bowl combined IMHO,” one fan wrote. While another added: “I’d love to see more match-play events like this rather than individual tournaments with a team element. A pure team-based match play format would make for more exciting and dynamic competition.”
This fan said, “Great format! I would like match-play on the final day, but I don’t know how to do it well with teams. Maybe play 36 holes and have semi-finals, then winners play each other, and losers play for 3/4th. Stroke play all four counting is the next best thing.”
“I love the format; it’s super intriguing,” another wrote on X. This fan loves the format but did suggest a change of location in 2025. “I like it! I think it being in Dallas will need to change,” they added. “It’s too hot to golf there right now. Come to the Midwest next year!”
The praise for LIV’s Team Championship format didn’t stop there. “I think it’s great to have the team aspect in with it,” another added. “Can’t wait to watch it play out. Good drama with what team will pick what team, etc…”
Crushers seek back-to-back LIV Golf Team Championship titles
So, who is in contention heading into LIV Golf’s Team Championship? Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers are eyeing back-to-back titles after winning in Florida last year.
Crushers currently top the team standings and are through to the semi-finals, along with Legion XIII and Cameron Smith’s Ripper GC.
Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC are fourth and will have the first pick ahead of the quarter-finals.
Iron Heads GC, led by Kevin Na, are Smash’s most likely opponents after finishing at the foot of the table.
