Golf fans have reacted after Ian Poulter suggested discussions have taken place regarding LIV Golf teams owning their home venues in the foreseeable future.

JCB Golf and Country Club will host this week’s UK event, which has proven to be a popular sell-out competition for Greg Norman and Co.

Since its inception, LIV has tried several new ideas, with the team-based format arguably the most successful venture.

However, it’s fair to say the mid-season transfer window wasn’t hit with golf fans.

The latest idea to be pitched involves teams owning their home course, something Poulter discussed during his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday.

“Yeah, we’ve spoken about it, but it comes down to finance at the end of the day,” said Poulter. “If we deliver on the golf course and win five tournaments next year, we can push this forward a bit quicker.

“I think every team has been tasked with a go-forward plan: what does three, five, or ten years look like? It’s definitely in that window of don’t think small, think big.”

Golf fans, however, completely disagree.

In reaction to Poulter’s suggestion, many fans have let their thoughts be known.

This fan wrote: “Why would they need to own a course? To serve what purpose.” While another added: “Sounds pointless.”

Another added: “Is there really any interest in this team thing? I really don’t get the concept of teams in golf. Seriously, what am I missing?”

“I don’t like this idea,” a fan added. “Will mean they end up having to play the same courses again and again in the tour rotation.”

Finally, this fan added: “You can’t just invent teams. There needs to be some context to create rivalries and peril. Otherwise, there’s no excitement and no point for me.”

Scathing backlash of LIV Golf’s latest idea

The team aspect of LIV, as previously mentioned, has had its positives. The event in Adelaide produced a brilliant finish, for example.

However, the concept of teams owning and playing their home course on a yearly basis feels dull and unimaginative. LIV has consistently prided itself on bringing golf to the masses, and locking off the rota would feel counterintuitive.

The team aspect has legs, but new and inventive ways of developing the concept need to be devised.
