Jay Monahan is competing at this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship as a star-studded field gathers on Scotland’s east coast.

Monahan will partner with Billy Horschel during this week’s pro-am-style event. PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan will also feature and will play alongside Monahan and Horschel at Carnoustie on Thursday.

Rory McIlroy is pleased Monahan and Al-Rumayyan are in the same group, and there’s no doubt that the PGA Tour-LIV Golf merger headlines will emerge this week.

On a slightly lighter note, however, footage emerged of Monahan’s swing on Wednesday, and golf fans are impressed with the PGA Tour commissioner’s technique.

After footage of Monahan emerged during a practice round, fans likened the commissioner’s swing to former European Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie.

“Thought that was Big Monty there,” wrote Brydo2121.

Nigel Williams added: “Touch of the Montys about his swing…nice tempo and completes.”

His swing looks a bit like Monty,” said Robert Daubs. While another fan added: “Oh, stop it, that’s Colin Montgomerie.

Marlon Christof also likened Monahan to Monty. “Thought it was Monty,” he wrote.

Finally, David Willoughby said: “Reminds me of Monty, forgive me Monty…”

McIlroy, talking to the press on Wednesday, admitted he’s delighted Johann Rupert—the organiser of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship—has attempted to reunite some of golf’s biggest names at this week’s event.

“I think what Johann Rupert, the man who runs this event, is trying to do is just bring the golf world back together a little bit,” McIlroy said.

“If we need to be forced together in some way, he’s trying to do that. I think it will be good. It’s certainly a step in the right direction.

“They (Monahan and Rumayyan) both want the same thing too. It’s a matter of getting all the different constituents on board.”
