Gary Player reacts as Scottie Scheffler wins the PGA Championship and has advice to give him

Winning a major championship is always a big deal but when you get the adulation from someone like Gary Player, who won nine, then you know you’re doing something right if you’re Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler stormed to his third major by winning at Quail Hollow and destroying the field with a fine back nine in the final round.

Despite momentary challenges from the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, Scheffler was unrelenting and ended up winning by five strokes.

It means Scheffler joins Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus in winning 15 PGA events and three majors before the age of 29.

And after getting himself alongside two legends with that achievement, Scheffler has now been lauded by another legend of the game, Gary Player.

Gary Player sends message to Scottie Scheffler after his win at Quail Hollow

Gary Player is one of the greatest to ever play the game and if he’s impressed by you, then you’re doing something right.

Player won nine majors in his career, including two PGA Championships, ten years apart in ’62 and ’72.

And over on social media, Player has sent a message to Scheffler and suggested that more is to come.

With Player having won three majors by the age of 27 and adding another two shortly after, Scheffler is very much on a similar trajectory to the South African.

Can Scottie Scheffler surpass Gary Player in major wins?

There’s a long way to go for Scottie Scheffler to get there but in terms of the career pattern, it’s not too dissimilar to the great South African.

Player won nine majors overall but there was a period of 19 years between him winning his first and last.

With Scheffler having won his first in 2022 and with time firmly on his side and in a decade’s time, it would be no surprise to see Scheffler in double figures.

Of course, maintaining longevity and consistency is one of the hardest things in golf. But right now, Scottie Scheffler is a cut above the rest.

If he can win the US Open or The Open this year as well, then he’ll soon have eyes on double figures and potentially, hunting Tiger Woods down.
