Despite failing to win in 2025 thus far, Scottie Scheffler’s game appears to be trending in the right direction ahead of the Players Championship and Masters Tournament.
Scheffler fell three shots short at the Genesis Invitational after mounting a final-round charge at Torrey Pines. Scheffler carded a six-under 66 to pile the pressure on Maverick McNealy and eventual winner Ludvig Aberg.
Aberg’s victory in San Diego was his second on the PGA Tour and further cemented his place among the game’s elite players. Aberg is now up to fourth in the world and only behind Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele.
After Scheffler’s dominance last year, the 28-year-old won’t be shifted anytime soon. Dan Rapaport, however, believes Aberg could be the man to one day topple Scheffler and claim the world number one spot.
Dan Rapaport makes world ranking claim about Ludvig Aberg

Aberg will be well fancied heading into The Players and Masters – and Rapaport believes the Swede has the potential to become, objectively, the world’s best player.
“People talk about him being a robot; I don’t think so. Just a massive win for Ludvig Aberg. This might blow your guy’s mind here a little bit, but I have a take. Ludvig is up to number four in the world. I think Scottie Scheffler is going to be number one in the world for a really long time. At least another year or so. I think the next guy who gets there is Ludvig Aberg, I really do,” Rapaport said in his latest podcast.
“He has been a star, you play a Ryder Cup before your first major championship, you win right away out of college, there are expectations, and he is delivering on them. It’s really fun to watch him emerge before our eyes.”

Scottie Scheffler set to be world number one for a very long time
Calculating the OWGR can prove challenging at times. However, after the 2024 Masters, world-ranking expert Nosferatu attempted to put into context just how much would need to happen for Scheffler to be toppled.
Nosferatu claimed that McIlroy, who was world number two at the time, would need to win “three majors plus some extra” to become world number one. What’s more, this outcome assumes Scheffler isn’t playing well.
Scottie Scheffler 2023/24 stats, per PGA Tour website
| Strokes gained | Rank |
| Putting | 95th |
| Off the tee | 2nd |
| Approach to green | 1st |
| Total | 1st |
After his second Masters victory at Augusta, Scheffler’s lead over the world number two was larger than any world number one has held since Tiger Woods in 2009.
One of Aberg, McIlroy or Xander Schauffele must put together an astonishing run of form and hope Scheffler has an off-season to stand any chance of closing the gap at the top of the OWGR rankings.
