Collin Morikawa has predicted what score could win the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands this weekend.

The American currently sits two shots behind leader Tom Kim [13 under] ahead of the third round after carding a seven-under 63 on Friday.

Morikawa is tied with Akshay Bhatia and Scottie Scheffler, with PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele one shot back on ten under.

This week’s PGA Tour signature event has been a far cry from the US Open at Pinehurst, with birdies and eagles in plentiful supply.

And Morikawa anticipates the scoring will deepen over the weekend.

Speaking after his round on Friday, Morikawa admitted he expects scoring to double during the final two rounds.

“Right now, it’s just all mental,” he explained. “I can’t get lazy the next two days. Scores are going to keep getting lower and probably double from where we are right now.”

The 2021 Open winner added: “The biggest thing for me if I want to stay in contention is not letting my mind wander. It’s been a long stretch, and it’s hot, but I want to win, and I am going to stay as sharp as possible.”

If the 27-year-old’s prediction rings true, a score of 26 under could be the number.

First win of 2024 only a matter of time for Collin Morikawa

Scheffler and Schauffele’s form, along with Bryson DeChambeau’s recent antics, may have drawn attention away from just how impressive Morikawa has been.

The American is rarely out of contention, and it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he returns to the winners’ circle.

With the PGA Tour playoffs fast approaching, there’s every chance of the world number seven making a serious play for the FedEx Cup at East Lake.

And a win in Connecticut this weekend would be ideal preparation ahead of what is a busy part of the golfing calendar.
