Claude Harmon wowed when told who’ll win more majors out of Scottie Scheffler or Rory McIlroy by PGA Tour winner

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are the number one and two ranked golfers in the world right now.

Scheffler is out in front on his own by some way, but McIlroy is undoubtedly right up there with the American when he’s at his best. The two golfers have six wins on the PGA Tour between them this season, and one major championship each.

After McIlroy’s win at Augusta, he was closing in on overtaking Scheffler as the world number one. However, the 29-year-old has gone from strength to strength since then, whilst the five-time major champion seems to have regressed.

Scheffler is unquestionably a more consistent golfer than McIlroy, but the Northern Irishman does have more of a box-office-type quality when he’s on song. However, it’s fair to suggest that if they played against each other 10 times, the American would most likely have the upper hand on the Masters champion.

McIlroy currently has five majors to his name, while Scheffler has three. Both players are extremely well-versed in getting the job done and winning golf tournaments when they are in contention to do so.

Scheffler doesn’t possess the ability to overpower a golf course like McIlroy does, but his iron play is far superior to the Northern Irishman’s. The man from Dallas, Texas, is a more consistent chipper and putter as well.

Gary Koch – a man with six PGA Tour titles to his name – was a guest on Claude Harmon’s Son of a Butch podcast, and he responded when asked who he believes will win more majors out of the two golfers, by the time their respective careers are finished.

Firstly though, he explained how Scheffler has an uncanny knack of getting the job done even when he only has his ‘B’ game.

Koch said: “Well, I mean, the US Open was a great example. I mean, he clearly did not have his A game.

“And I would argue maybe the first couple of days, it might not even have been his B game. And sure enough, come the end of the week, where does he finish? Top 10.

“So that and you know, I can remember Tiger, you know, didn’t make a lot of other players very happy, but sometimes Tiger would announce that he had won with his B game.

Harmon then asked Koch: “So I’m going to put you on the spot. Who has more majors at the end of their career, Rory or Scottie?“

Koch responded: “Wow. So we got Rory at five and again, he’s a little bit older now. Yeah. And Scottie’s at three. I’m going to say Scottie ends up with more.“

To which Harmon simply replied, “Wow.“
