Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are hands down the best two players in the world right now, and they have been for quite some time now.
Scheffler is the world number one by quite some distance from second placed McIlroy.
And there is one huge difference between the two players that has enabled the American to move away from the Irishman.
Scheffler is unable to overpower golf courses like McIlroy does, but the world number one is far more consistent in every single department of the game.
It seems like the 28-year-old is quite simply never out of contention in a golf tournament that he plays.

Scheffler said that McIlroy’s win at the Masters motivated him more to work even harder back in April.
He said: “I think any time somebody has beaten any of us out here, I think we’re all — I guess you could say inspired, but I think we’re all fired up to come out here and compete. I think that’s what’s great about our game. Week in and week out, we get to come out here and compete. This week I was the best player. I have the week off, and we’ll see the week after who is the best player at the PGA. Rory has been playing some tremendous golf this year. The career grand slam was really special to watch. I was glad to be able to be there for it. I think any time you’re getting beat, you’re always fired up just a little bit extra to go out and practice. I feel like my game is trending in a good direction. I’m excited to start the rest of the season.“
And he has proven since then that he meant every word he said.
Rory McIlroy is making Scottie Scheffler look even more impressive
McIlroy has proven that he’s far from infallible this season.
He missed the cut two weeks ago at the Canadian Open, and just about made the weekend at the US Open.
And that right there is the big difference between him and Scheffler.
The 28-year-old world number one just doesn’t have off weeks. He played poorly at the US Open last week, but still managed to finish in a tie for seventh.

He is able to rack up top-10s all the time because he doesn’t have any weaknesses. If for some reason he’s off with his driver or irons one week, then his short game will bail him out.
Scheffler is incredibly strong mentally as well. While McIlroy seems to make things harder than they need to be for himself, Scheffler continues to move along in cruise control.
PGA Tour 2025 stats compared – Scottie Scheffler vs Rory McIlroy
Scheffler has turned on the afterburners over the past two months, and has left McIlroy in his wake.
It is very interesting when looking at both players’ statistics so far this season.
Scheffler is like a machine whereas McIlroy clearly has some weaknesses.
| Stats | Scheffler | McIlroy |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 2nd | 1st |
| Strokes gained approach | 1st | 79th |
| Strokes gained scrambling | 2nd | 33rd |
| Strokes gained putting | 20th | 12th |
| Strokes gained total | 1st | 2nd |
Scheffler is clearly streets ahead of McIlroy when it comes to statistics this season.
And he has produced better results than the Northern Irishman as well.
| Results | Scheffler | McIlroy |
| Events played | 13 | 11 |
| Wins | 3 | 3 |
| Top-5s | 7 | 4 |
| Top-10s | 10 | 5 |
| Top-25s | 13 | 9 |
| Missed cuts | 0 | 1 |
Scheffler’s brilliance this season has been accentuated by the fact that even McIlroy has off weeks.
The Masters champion has displayed incredible consistency himself in all fairness to him, but his results are made to look rather average in comparison to Scheffler’s.
The world number one has finished inside the top-25 in every single event he has played in 2025, and it’s impossible to do that stat justice – it’s just so impressive.
Scheffler is producing levels of consistent brilliance right now that we haven’t seen since the days of Tiger Woods, and even McIlroy can’t compete with him right now.
