The LIV Golf season concludes in Dallas this weekend as the Team Championship takes centre stage at Maridoe Golf Club.

Jon Rahm added $22 million to his season earnings at last week’s individual finale in Chicago, and the Spaniard will be looking for yet another paycheque as Legion XIII eye the team crown.

The LIV Golf Team Championship will incorporate match play and stroke play in what is a unique event in Texas.

Ripper GC skipper Smith is pleased with one change compared to the 2022 and 2023 editions.

Previously, captains were required to face off against other captains in Friday’s and Saturday’s singles. Now, the rule has been relaxed. Captains, such as Smith and Bryson DeChambeau, are now free to face non-captains or even participate in the foursomes.

“It’s a good move,” Smith said on the rule change.“ It gives teams an opportunity to kind of play around with maybe stacking a side or doing something like that.

“It’s way better being able to choose who you pick for matches. It creates a bit more drama.”

LIV Golf Team Championship explained ahead of Dallas event

LIV Golf does come under intense scrutiny at times; however, the breakaway league deserves credit for this innovative season finale.

The format will see the top three teams after the Chicago event receive a bye into the semi-finals, meaning Crushers, Rippers, and Legion XIII will sit out Friday’s play.

The remaining ten teams will compete in the quarter-finals. Seeds four through seven choose their opponent for the first day of team match play. Each match-up competes for three points: two singles—worth one point each—and one foursome, which is also worth a point. As previously mentioned, captains are free to participate in any match.

Winning teams will then advance to Saturday’s semi-finals, where the same format will be used. On Sunday, the format will revert back to stroke play, where all four scores count.
