The LIV Golf vs PGA Tour ‘Showdown’ is set to dominate the headlines this week as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy face off against Brook Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau at Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas.

The Showdown – which will be broadcast on TNT Sports – is the first time LIV and PGA Tour players have faced off in a one-off match since the PIF-backed venture’s inception back in 2022.

With talks between the PIF and PGA Tour still rumbling on, the Las Vegas event is a clear indication of what the best players in the world want to happen. McIlroy is eager for reunification to occur, and many will hope this week’s reunion will spur golf’s high-profile administrators into making a decision.

Multiple media stunts have taken place in the lead-up to the LIV vs PGA Tour match, and DeChambeau, Scheffler, McIlroy, and Koepka have spent plenty of time together over the past few weeks.

The quartet appear to be getting on well, so much so that Scheffler was featured in one of DeChambeau’s latest Instagram posts.

The 2024 US Open winner wrote, “Golf is back,” before posting a video of himself and Scheffler. In the footage, the world number one tries to high-five DeChambeau, but the LIV Golf man comically refuses.

What could come after ‘The Showdown’ 2024?

Of course, the hope is that the collaboration in Las Vegas will force the hand of those attempting to reunify the game. Yet, if protracted negotiations between the Saudis and PGA Tour continue, the Las Vegas event could be the start of a wider LIV vs PGA Tour series.

It’s believed that a larger-scale Ryder Cup-style event could soon see more players from both tours face off. Given the hype surrounding this week’s Showdown, this concept could get off the ground.

Golf fans are eager to see the top players compete more frequently, regardless of whether a merger agreement comes to fruition. With the potential for lucrative financial incentives, LIV vs PGA Tour matches could become a regular fixture starting in 2025 and beyond.
