Bryson DeChambeau has shared whether he regrets any of the past mistakes he has made, with the US Open leader now establishing himself as one of the most popular players in the world today.

Bryson DeChambeau has put himself in a brilliant position at Pinehurst No. 2 heading into the final round, with the 30-year-old boasting a three-shot lead over the likes of Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and Matthieu Pavon.

Had golf fans been told a few years ago that DeChambeau would have the majority of golf fans eating out of the palm of his hand, they probably would not have believed you.

The 2020 US Open champion had previously been one of the divisive characters in the game, with his innovation and antics splitting supporters like few others on one of the major tours.

DeChambeau has come in for a lot of criticism and ridicule down the years for things he has done on and off the golf course, but he appears to have turned a corner in the last couple of seasons.

Of course, he now has a YouTube channel, and his popularity appears to have risen at a rapid rate. And he is clearly relishing being the player the galleries must not take their eyes off.

Bryson DeChambeau shares whether he regrets his past mistakes

Speaking in his press conference after his third round, DeChambeau – who almost appeared a little emotional – was asked about the reception he has received from the crowd, before it was then put to him that he may regret the mistakes he has made in the past.

“It’s meant a lot to me, just thinking back three years ago, the landscape was a lot different. I tried to show everybody who I was, I didn’t do it the right way and could’ve done a lot of things better. I’m lucky to have a great team around me to help me move in the right direction with the content we’re producing, social media, and also, just a great perspective on life,” he said.

“That combination of things have allowed me to to not only have a new perspective, but an opportunity to show myself in a different light and entertain fans out there on the golf course.”

“It’s not a regret, it’s a learning experience. I never regret anything in life. Do I not like what I did? Absolutely, but every moment that I live in this life, I’m always trying to learn from my mistakes,” he added.

“Could you call it a mistake? Sure, you could call it a bunch of things, but for the most part, the most important piece of it all is that you’re growing and learning, you’re growing from those moments. That’s the best thing I can say to someone that’s struggling, essentially, to say hey, you’re in a bad spot, get some good people around you, give yourself a new perspective in life, and get after it. And show them who you truly are, no matter what situation you’re in, that’s one of the pieces of advice that I give anybody that’s struggling.”

What golf fans may never truly know about DeChambeau

Of course, there is always likely to be a debate over how genuine DeChambeau is, particularly when he acknowledges how important his team is. Sceptics will probably argue that he has been told what will look good for his image.

But that will not matter to the golf fans who support DeChambeau. Ultimately, he is one of the most entertaining figures in the current game; he is definitely one of the most intriguing.

The fact that he appears to have had such a big turnaround only adds to the intrigue, as we will probably never quite know what the balance truly is between his team intervening and the changes DeChambeau genuinely wanted to make in his life.
