Bryson DeChambeau’s putting perhaps goes under the radar, given the LIV Golf star’s ability to launch the ball further than most tee-to-green.

For example, DeChambeau’s 7-iron goes 235 yards, which is, quite frankly, ridiculous. It’s easy to see why the American’s distance takes the headlines.

Yet, during the 31-year-old’s US Open win at Pinehurst No.2, a series of clutch putts ultimately saw DeChambeau triumph and Rory McIlroy dealt another late blow in a major.

Under pressure, DeChambeau’s technique improved, while the Northern Irishman looked tentative and non-committal to some of his strokes.

The LIV star famously uses a unique arm lock, which he adopted after watching Matt Kuchar in 2017.

During his latest Break 50 episode alongside NFL legend Tom Brady, DeChambeau discussed his unique putting style and revealed how watching Kuchar was the catalyst for change.

“That thing has been in my hands since 2017. I hold it under a trigger so it controls where I am on my elbow. Everyone is like where do I grip it? I was like, just hook it around the bottom and lock it in, and then I push it against my forehand to make sure that the face is stable, so even when I get a little scared or nervous, the face stays square,” DeChambeau explained.

“I do consider myself a really good putter now. I was one of the worst putters in 2017. Statistically, I was probably dead last. I did a bunch of stuff. Ultimately, it got to a point where I was like, I have to really figure this out. I saw Matt Kuchar do it one time, and it was arm lock, and I was like, let me try that, and it changed my game forever. So I have Matt Kuchar to that, which is a kind of weird, cool, fun fact.”

What is arm lock putting?

Arm lock putting involves leaning the putter shaft against the lead forearm to create a constant grip. Improved consistency and rhythm can occur as a result.

During the highly pressurised moments, taking the hands out of the equation can be beneficial. DeChambeau is now an elite-level putter and is reliable from all over the green.

DeChambeau’s pace control is also impressive. The LIV Golf star uses a methodical ruler-based system to ensure he hits putts at the correct pace.

Yet, as is usually the way in professional golf, the 31-year-old’s technique has been criticised.

“In my opinion, we have to get rid of the arm-lock,” Brad Faxon said in 2021. “It’s absolutely anchoring. If the USGA doesn’t think it is, then they need to look at themselves in the mirror.”
