Bryson DeChambeau praises Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer for what they did after they won the US Open

Bryson DeChambeau won his second US Open title last year after beating Rory McIlroy in an epic final round at Pinehurst.

DeChambeau lost his 54-hole lead to McIlroy on Sunday and looked out of it until the Northern Irishman bogeyed three of the last four holes.

The LIV Golf superstar was understandably overjoyed to win the tournament for a second time, and he celebrated accordingly.

Indeed, he interacted with the fans at Pinehurst in a way that very few have in major championship history.

Now, DeChambeau has explained the thinking behind his eye-catching celebrations and credited Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer for inspiring him.

While DeChambeau did not point to any specific tournaments, he praised Woods and Palmer for how they celebrated their biggest successes.

Three-time US Open winner Woods and 1960 US Open champion Palmer were not only two of the greatest golfers ever, but two of the most popular.

Part of the reason for that was how they connected with fans better than most, and DeChambeau wants to emulate them.

“Well, I think giving people that exposure to touch the trophy, being part of the crowd, and riling up the crowd,” he explained.

“I don’t know if it’s been done in a long time. Tiger did it very well when he would win with his celebrations and whatnot.

“I try to model myself a little bit like Arnold Palmer. I look at the legacy that he’s created, and I want to further that.

“That’s ultimately my goal, and if I can continue to make just a small positive impact on a kid’s life, that’s what matters most to me.”

What Nick Faldo said immediately after Bryson DeChambeau’s US Open celebrations

Nick Faldo reacted to DeChambeau’s US Open victory on Sky Sports shortly after the winning putt was holed.

He was impressed with the 31-year-old’s performance and said he had ”the celebration of celebrations,” which is a fair description.

“Well, it was an unbelievable finish,” Faldo said. “The celebration of celebrations. Rory is going to be brokenhearted, so I feel for him. That’s what sport is all about, though.

“I think this man came here on a mission, so all credit to him, after finishing just one back [at the PGA],” Faldo said.

“He finds a way and brings his own energy here. Incredible week. He has mastered this golf course, you have to say with that score. We were thinking a couple under, so that’s very impressive, six under.”
