He might not have won in the end but Bryson DeChambeau showed his class by finding time to praise two of his fellow golfers at Valhalla this weekend.
DeChambeau produced a stunning final round to finish on 20-under par and looked like he was going to force a nervy three-hole play-off with Xander Schauffele.
However, Schauffele holed out on 18 to finally win his first major tournament.
As Schauffele won, DeChambeau was among the first players to make his way to the 30-year-old to offer up his congratulations.
And speaking in his press conference, DeChambeau continued to be magnanimous in defeat by praising two of his rivals.
Bryson DeChambeau really impressed by Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland at the PGA
Speaking to the media in the immediate aftermath of finishing second, DeChambeau admitted to being super-impressed by the efforts from both Hovland and Schauffele.
“I seriously thought 18 was going to do it but then when I saw what Xander was doing I was like man, he is playing some unbelievable golf,” DeChambeau said.
“And then Victor was right there and he was beating me for quite a while and I was hitting it all over the place.
“It was an impressive round of golf by all three of us and I don’t know what else to say, it was just difficult.”
A new Bryson DeChambeau
The 30-year-old has been a bit marmite in his career but this version of Bryson DeChambeau very much seems a more calm and appreciative presence.
A lot of golf fans are attributing DeChambeau’s surge in popularity to the fact he has a brilliant YouTube channel, which opens the door for fans to see him in another light.
That will be playing a part for sure. But DeChambeau is also that bit older, doesn’t have a single money worry in the world thanks to LIV, and can simply come and play golf.
When he’s on form like he was over the weekend, then a second major is not going to be too far away.
Certainly, had it gone to a play-off, few would have betted against him seeing Schauffele off.
