Bryson DeChambeau will be one of the favourites to win the US Open at Oakmont.

Oakmont is suited perfectly to DeChambeau‘s game, with his enormous length off the tee and his exquisite touch around the greens.

He has already won the US Open twice, and many fancy him to make it three come 7pm on Sunday evening.

DeChambeau has actually found it tough going at Oakmont ahead of the US Open, although he still ground out a round of even-par 70 in his practice round last week.

The 31-year-old American has been in fine form this year, having won once on LIV and contended in both majors.

DeChambeau has been driving the ball longer and straighter than ever this year, but his iron play has let him down when the pressure really cranks up.

He put a new set of irons in his bag at LIV Virginia this week, and he definitely improved his approach play compared to what we have seen recently.

He hit just over 75% of greens in regulation at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Club – 4% up on his season average.

But will they stay in the bag for Oakmont?

Bryson DeChambeau says what he thinks of his new irons ahead of the US Open

There’s a reason why DeChambeau is known as ‘the scientist’ in golfing circles.

He leaves no stone unturned when it comes to the performance of his equipment.

The two-time major winner is never afraid to make big calls regarding his clubs heading into huge events.

And with the US Open just around the corner, there were some fans and golf analysts questioning his decision to switch irons.

But what did the man himself think of the new clubs?

He addressed reporters on Sunday and responded when asked how his new irons felt during LIV Virginia.

He said, Yeah, they felt pretty good. I think there’s more optimization at play, potential optimization at play, but it’s a good start. I drove it really poorly for my own standards this week, so I’m going to go work on that.

One thing that we can all be assured of is that DeChambeau will work his tail off over the next few days to ensure that he’s in prime position to challenge for the US Open trophy at Oakmont.

DeChambeau drops new club hint ahead of the US Open

The 31-year-old is not afraid of tinkering with his equipment.

And it seems like he could be set to make a major change just before the US Open.

DeChambeau spoke to reporters after his final round in Virginia, and suggested that a new driver could make an appearance at Oakmont.

I feel like the driver might have kind of given way this week, he explained. I’ve used it for over three months now and it’s time to put a freshy in. It’s something I’m going to work on for next week and get ready.

That would be an incredibly bold move from DeChambeau, ahead of the US Open at Oakmont where driving is going to be so crucially important.
