Billy Horschel is stone-dead last at the Tour Championship after carding a two-over 73 at East Lake.

The American made four bogeys to play his way firmly out of contention after what has been an impressive end to the 2024 season. Horschel was a threat to Scottie Scheffler heading into the Tour Championship, but it appears he will now be battling it out at the opposite end of the leaderboard.

Horschel faced critics at The Open, where he finished T2 alongside Justin Rose. Now, after his disappointing start in Atlanta, Horschel has been greeted with yet more online criticism.

A fan – named Cody Phelps – replied to a picture Horschel posted on X. “You’re the biggest nerd I’ve ever seen. Your play represents that,” Phelps wrote.

Horschel jovially replied: “Guess he wasn’t a fan of my Georgia Tech colours on Tuesday either.” The fan then added: “Dead last is a solid spot for you. Only man over par.”

Finally, Horschel responded: “Someone has to be last. Not my first time being last. Still doing better than you, though.”

The American, as always, was able to look at the funny side of his disappointing first round at the Tour Championship.

Online criticism of Billy Horschel at the Tour Championship is bizarre

Horschel is one of the most popular names on tour. During the Open Championship, for example, the British crowds embraced the 37-year-old as he made a run for the Claret Jug.

This criticism, in particular, feels completely unjustified.

Horschel has enjoyed an exceptional end to the PGA Tour season and has done incredibly well to make the FedEx Cup field.

He’s up against the best of the best and would’ve needed an all-time performance even to stand a chance of golf’s most lucrative prize. Thankfully, Horschel has seen the funny side of the comments made after his first round in Atlanta.
