Scottie Scheffler’s tip for amateurs on how to hit the ‘cool’ short game shot that always catches the eye

Scottie Scheffler is the very best player in the world of golf right now so if he’s giving out the tips on how to play a specific chip shot, you sit up and take notice.

Scheffler has made a habit of being one of the best players in the world across all aspects of his game.

However, his short game is something that can often be overlooked, just purely because of how much focus is on how accurate he is off the tee.

Nevertheless, he is one of the very best short game players in the world and like all the best in the world, he has an array of shots.

And back in 2024, Scheffler did his best in a video for Titleist to explain how to play what he calls a ‘low skipper shot’.

How Scottie Scheffler plays one of the coolest shots in golf

Scottie Scheffler has all the tricks in the book around the greens it seems and when he’s explaining how to play the shots he uses, it’s worth listening to.

For the ‘low skipper’, Scheffler has a specific routine and setup to go through to get it right, as well as the circumstances being correct on the course.

Indeed, Scheffler believes that by having this shot in the locker, it makes for excellent television for the viewer.

“I use this shot for instance if the greens get pretty quick and let’s say the pin’s on the top of a tier and I have a lot of green to work with,” Scheffler explained.

“You still want to get the ball to stop but I’ll hit a lower trajectory shot so that when it goes over that tier, it’ll be that kind of cool shot you see on TV, where it skips and then comes to a stop.

“Technique wise, I’ll usually open the face up a little bit and then what I feel is my right forearm almost hooking the club face. So my right arm I’ll feel a little bit of a hook. It’s not a turnover in the wrist, it’s in the forearm and keeps that clubface nice and level. For shots like this, it’s really important to trust your golf ball.”

Rory McIlroy’s perfect example of a skipper shot

While Scottie Scheffler is the man demonstrating the technique here, it’s worth noting just how impressive Rory McIlroy looked when he pulled off a similar shot at the Ryder Cup in 2023.

With the pressure on, McIlroy found himself out of position off the tee and with around 50 yards to the hole off the green and over a ridge.

In one of the most remarkable shots in recent history, McIlroy played it to absolute perfection, incorporating everything Scheffler says here into getting the perfect trajectory.

With the Ryder Cup coming up in less than two weeks, the idea of seeing Scheffler and McIlroy go head to head at Bethpage Black is something to salivate over.
