Bryson DeChambeau will make his return to the Ryder Cup stage next week at Bethpage Black, with the LIV Golf star qualifying automatically for Keegan Bradley’s side.
It is going to be fascinating to see how Keegan Bradley uses Bryson DeChambeau at the Ryder Cup. He is unique in the current game, which potentially makes finding him a partner in foursomes a little more challenging.
Webb Simpson has said that the plan is to use DeChambeau as much as possible. Paul Azinger is one of those who has praised Bradley’s ideas for DeChambeau.
So it is going to be intriguing to see whether DeChambeau’s week in New York better resembles his first or his second appearance in the Ryder Cup.
Bryson DeChambeau shares what Phil Mickelson told him on his Ryder Cup debut which shocked him
Many will remember DeChambeau impressing alongside Scottie Scheffler at Whistling Straits in 2021. But back in 2018, the 32-year-old endured a much more disappointing week.
DeChambeau was paired with Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods in the foursomes in France. In truth, Mickelson had no business playing in the alternate shot format that week. Meanwhile, Woods was clearly drained as he played his third match of the event – so soon after winning the Tour Championship.

Nevertheless, speaking on the Ryder Cup YouTube channel, DeChambeau spoke fondly about his debut in the event, even after a bizarre incident in his match alongside Mickelson.
“From my first one, Tiger telling me to hit the first tee shot at Le Golf National. I didn’t know what to do or think, I was very much thrown in the fire. Playing with Tiger was very nerve-racking for me. He’s an intimidating guy, I love the guy, and he’s amazing. But it was wild to see how everybody reacted and treated us with us being overseas. My biggest memory was playing with Tiger on the first tee,” he said.
“Another one was Phil Mickelson, he wasn’t playing that great then and he goes, ‘Bryson, I just need a pep talk right now, you need to give me a pep talk’. As a veteran, the second-most winning golfer in our era. For me to give him a pep talk down the third fairway, I was like, ‘this is so wrong’, the roles have been reversed. What’s going on?”
Bryson DeChambeau’s Ryder Cup results as he prepares for his third appearance
DeChambeau, Mickelson and Woods were the only players on either side to lose all of their matches during the 2018 Ryder Cup. The Crushers captain was beaten by Alex Noren in the Sunday singles.
Thankfully for DeChambeau, the 2021 event proved to be significantly different.
| Year | Format | Playing partner | Opponent | Result |
| 2018 | Foursomes | Phil Mickelson | Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren | L 5&4 |
| 2018 | Foursomes | Tiger Woods | Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari | L 5&4 |
| 2021 | Fourballs | Scottie Scheffler | Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton | AS |
| 2021 | Fourballs | Scottie Scheffler | Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland | W 3&1 |
DeChambeau and a rookie by the name of Scottie Scheffler were unbeaten in their two matches together in Wisconsin. DeChambeau had started his journey towards becoming one of the most popular players on the planet.
You would imagine that the home fans are going to absolutely love him again in the coming days. DeChambeau is likely to be so influential in determining the atmosphere at Bethpage Black.
If he plays well over the week, it is going to be extremely difficult for Europe to halt the USA’s momentum.
