For most amateurs, launching a big drive off the tee is the most exciting part of playing golf.

Whether it’s practicing at the driving range or setting up an eagle attempt on a par-five, hitting the ball a long distance naturally provides a feeling that hooks people into the sport.

Advice from some of the game’s greatest players is readily available across various social media platforms for those looking to improve speed and distance. Recently, Rory McIlroy highlighted the biggest mistake amateurs make with the driver, and LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson, who is looking to grow his YouTube channel, is the latest to offer important guidance.

In a recent LIV Golf clip, Mickelson detailed how clearing the front leg is crucial when gaining extra yards.

“The one I really like to focus on is the front leg push because it’s important for creating speed,” the six-time major winner revealed.

“If you watch the guys who are long drivers like Bryson, Bubba and hit it really hard, all the long drive guys. Your knee is meant to bend. It is not meant to support that type of violent rotation, so it’s important that this gives a little bit. The toe is able to give. So, as we push your foot comes off the ground and relieves the pressure.”

Mickelson added: “We’ve learned the hard way through a bunch of players who have not done that, swing violently and have a bunch of knee surgeries.

“One of the power sources is to push with your front leg. It’s almost up and back. I don’t want to be going forward. I wanna have my body work back and create a little more of a power source in my leg.”

Worst knee injuries in golf

Mickelson’s comments on knee surgeries could well be a sly dig at Tiger Woods. The 15-time major winner underwent knee surgery in 2008 and has been constrained over the past 15 years.

Other notable names who’ve suffered through the years include John Daly and Bubba Watson. More recently, however, Ludvig Aberg underwent surgery after suffering during the 2024 PGA Tour season.

The Swede is back to full fitness and competing at this weekend’s Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.
