Cameron Young finally won his first PGA Tour event at the Wyndham Championship last weekend.
The 28-year-old had a five-shot lead over Nico Echavarria after 36 holes and cruised to victory in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club.
Even though he had never won before, he was already known as one of the best drivers of the golf ball in the world.
Young’s Wyndham Championship victory will only have enhanced his reputation, so here are some tips for amateurs who want to drive like him.

Cameron Young shares how to drive the ball like him
Young shared some key driver tips in a YouTube video with Skratch, starting with the most important aspect of any swing: the setup.
“Some of the major things I focus on are the setup,” he said. “I am constantly working to get my legs pretty neutral, not leaning forward or back. And to get the ball up to just off my left foot.
“I think that just puts you in a nice position to then be able to turn freely and use your body as you are supposed to.”
Young regularly plays with amateur golfers in PGA Tour pro-am events, so he knows which mistakes are often made.
“You see a lot of mediocre grips,” he added. “You see people with their hands way [on top] or way under. Those mistakes are going to change your golf swing, because you try and compensate for them.”
The Wyndham Championship winner then explained how to hit a low draw shot, which can be particularly useful on dogleg left holes and in windy conditions.
Young continued: “I put the ball a bit further back in my stance, that usually helps me draw it just a little and choke up just a hair.”
Cameron Young’s driving statistics vs Rory McIlroy’s
While Cameron Young is known for his excellent driving, Rory McIlroy will probably go down as the greatest driver in golfing history.
The Northern Irishman is actually having a below-par year off the tee, but he has still outperformed Young in most key categories.
| Statistic | Cameron Young | Rory McIlroy |
| Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee | 0.226 (54th) | 0.632 (4th) |
| Driving Distance | 312.4 yards (26th) | 323.4 yards (2nd) |
| Ball Speed | 183.26 mph (14th) | 184.92 mph (8th) |
| Driving Accuracy | 53.11% (163rd) | 50.58% (174th) |
Even though McIlroy’s driving accuracy is slightly worse, he has gained significantly more strokes off the tee in 2025.
The Masters champion also hits it over 10 yards further than Young and ranks second only to Aldrich Potgieter among every PGA Tour player.
