There’s something about listening to professional golfers give away their secrets to success and Billy Horschel is one of those PGA Tour pros worth tuning into.

Horschel is known as one of the TOUR’s good guys and over his career, he’s always dedicated time and effort to speaking to the media and doing his duty to help grow the game.

In the modern era, a lot of that is taking part in social media content and putting on clinics for fans to take away and practice themselves.

As we know, Horschel has won eight times on the PGA Tour, including a TOUR Championship and a Memorial Tournament, so he knows a thing or two about playing all the shots needed.

Thankfully for us mere mortals, he’s given away some of his advice on how to play the ideal chip shot around the green.

Billy Horschel’s top tip to get the ball in the air around the greens

Billy Horschel has made a habit of being one of the most efficient players and in terms of scrambling, he was top 10 in 2024.

So, it goes without saying that he knows a thing or two about getting up and down and in a tip video from 2023, Horschel revealed how amateurs can help themselves get the ball up in the air.

“So, a lot of times what I see with amateurs is they don’t have the face open enough. They have it way too square and try and help it up in the air. What you see with us pros is we have a tonne of loft already so the ball’s going to shoot up in the air no matter what,” Horschel explained.

So all I’ll do is open up the face, then grip the face, don’t go closed because that doesn’t do anything and then just hit the ground with it, there’s a reason the bounce is there. That allows you to stop digging anymore. Open it up, don’t be afraid to hit the ground and almost feel that bounce like I was talking about.”

What Billy Horschel plans to do now he’s back from injury

2025 was unfortunate for Horschel in that he missed a bit of time through injury and ultimately, cost himself a chance at the Ryder Cup – through no fault of his own obviously.

However, now he’s back and looking to kick on again and it’s obvious that a major is the thing he wants most.

Horschel has come close a couple of times, notably at The Open in 2024.

Now, though, Horschel says he wants even more as he shared his plan for the next years of his career.

“Going forward I am not worried about any situation of being injured. I think it’s actually been a really good time to have off,” Horschel explained.

“Having these three to four months to really get even stronger with my upper body. We haven’t been able to do much lower body because of the hip. But some areas in the upper body are getting stronger and can provide a bit more stability and strength and power throughout the swing.

“I still believe even at 38 turning 39 at the end of the year, I believe I am nowhere close to reaching my potential. I believe there is a lot of really good golf left in store for me. So hopefully for the next four, five, six years we can put two or three really solid years together and see what comes out of it. I think if I am able to do that, I think some of the goals that I still haven’t accomplished will be accomplished.”

With plenty of golf left to come for Horschel, it would really be a superb story if he could finally get over the line and win one of the big ones.
