Oakmont proved to be borderline impossible for some of the best players in the world during the US Open.

J.J. Spaun won the US Open at Oakmont after shooting rounds of 66, 72, 69, 72.

It’s supposed to be difficult at the US Open, we all know that.

However, Oakmont was actually unplayable at times during the final round, after a deluge of rain hammered down on the golf course.

There were certain parts of the course that were labelled unfair, with Justin Thomas suggesting that the slopes on the fairways of holes 11, 12 and 15 at Oakmont were overly excessive, and too punishing.

In general, it was an extremely difficult test of golf for everyone in the field. The fact that only one player ended the week under par tells us all we need to know.

However, how would an amateur golfer get on around Oakmont, when playing under US Open conditions?

What a one-handicap golfer shot around Oakmont the day after the US Open

Golf Channel’s Braden Newcomer, who has a handicap index of 0.6, was given the chance to play Oakmont on Monday.

The course was set up exactly the same as it was for the final round of the US Open.

Being a one-handicapper, Newcomer obviously knows his way around a golf course.

However, he experienced a really challenging day on the links on Monday afternoon.

Newcomer shot a round of 23-over par 93 at Oakmont, while playing off the back tees.

That might sound bad, but it’s really not. Oakmont is an incredibly difficult golf course where every mistake is punished to the absolute maximum.

Newcomer, of the Golf Channel, got to experience first-hand on Monday how unforgiving Oakmont is.

To call the golf course a demanding track is an understatement.
