Three players over the age of 40 who could actually win the US Open at Pinehurst

With the PGA Championship in the bag, the focus in terms of golfs majors now turns to the US Open at Pinehurst in a few weeks.

Xander Schauffele came out on top during an excellent tournament at Valhalla that went right to the wire as Schauffele holed out to win on 18.

Now, despite the Charles Schwab Challenge being played this weekend, attention for a lot of the players is turning to the US Open at Pinehurst No.2 on the 13th June.

Quite who the winner will be is anyone’s guess.

However, there are so many quality golfers now across both the PGA and LIV Golf tours that any number of players will fancy their chances.

And that includes players who some might feel are past their prime. Tiger Woods, as we know, will tee it up at Pinehurst but he’s looked a mile off it in his most recent showings.

But that’s not to say that everyone going into the later years of their careers is struggling the same way.

With that, we’ve looked at THREE players above the age of 40 who could genuinely win the US Open in 2024.

Justin Rose

The Englishman has roared back to life in the last few weeks and produced a stunning weekend at Valhalla to be in contention to win going into the final day.

In the end, Rose – 43 – dropped away from being a genuine threat to Schauffele at the top but he still showed enough to suggest he’s back to near his best.

Already a winner of the US Open back in 2013, Rose will fancy his chances and through two rounds at the Charles Schwab, he was once again under par in 18th place.

Rose, then, will be hoping to carry his form into Pinehurst and cause another upset.

Alex Noren

It’s quite remarkable to think that Alex Noren has yet to register a win on the PGA Tour.

Noren, now 41, has won plenty of times on the European Tour but even then, you have to go back to 2018 to see his last win.

The Swedish star, though, has shown signs of life this year and his 12th place at the PGA last weekend among his best ever finishes in a major.

Noren, then, will fancy his chances of breaking his PGA duck and what better way to do it than winning a major.

Adam Scott

Another major winner hoping to add a second many years after his first, Adam Scott continues to have one of the most watchable swings on the PGA Tour.

Scott, now 43, won the Masters back in 2013 and while he didn’t make the cut at Valhalla last weekend, he did produce a tidy 22nd place finish at the Masters.

In fairness, it has been some time since Scott won on the tour and in terms of the majors, he’s not really been in contention since finishing third at the PGA in 2018.

Indeed, Scott needs a good finish at Colonial this weekend to move back into the top 60 and even qualify for Pinehurst.

However, you just never know in golf and like Justin Rose, he is another player who has managed to get under par after two tricky rounds at the Colonial this week so far.

Scott remains a class act and on his day, can win on the big stage.
