Golf fans are shocked at what Max Homa just did on day one of the Charles Schwab Classic at Colonial Country Club.

Six-time PGA Tour event winner Homa is back competing immediately after last week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, where he finished T35 on eight under.

However, things haven’t quite gone to plan at Colonial.

Homa currently sits T129 after carding an eight-over-par 78 during his first round in Fort Worth.

Starting on the 10th, the 33-year-old made three bogeys on his front nine before dropping five further shots on his back nine [Colonial’s front].

With Scottie Scheffler also over par, the Texas track is clearly playing tough. Nevertheless, Homa’s first 18 holes have left the golfing world in shock.

Homa has typically been one of the most consistent players on tour in recent years. In 2024, the Burbank-born star has finished T3 at The Masters, T8 at the Wells Fargo Championship, and T8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Such a damaging round was never on the cards – and fans around the world agree.

As highlighted by Rick Gehman, Homa’s round at Colonial was the 10th worst of his entire career – and his worst since 2019.

Golf fan Michael Jackson reacted on X: “Waking up today, don’t think Max Homa would be dead last in a golf tournament.”

Another X user, Jake James, added: “Anyone know what the hellllll happened to Max Homa today lol, he has been playing well I feel like.”

Jason Edwards claimed he still can’t figure Homa out. “@Jake_James_7 course was definitely playing difficult, scores not near as low as R1 of PGA Championship last week. But +8 is REALLY bad. I still can’t figure him out.”

Finally, fan account, Birdies and Boats can’t believe what happened to Homa. The account wrote: “Max Homa finished 8 over today? Holy smokes, what has happened to this man.”

A week off could have done Max Homa good

Before the PGA Championship, Homa was tipped by many to land his first major at Valhalla.

But, after failing to contend in Louisville, perhaps taking a week off would’ve been the wise decision. 12 tournaments – including two majors – may have taken its toll on the American.

With the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2 under a month away, perhaps taking time away from the course to recover physically and mentally would benefit Homa immensely.

There’s a major champion in there somewhere, but continuously playing week in and week out could cause more harm than good.
