The year’s second major gets underway on May 16 as the PGA Championship returns to Valhalla for the first time in ten years.
The Louisville venue was the scene of Rory McIlroy’s last major victory in 2014. The Northern Irishman secured a narrow one-shot triumph over Phil Mickelson, who nearly chipped in on his 72nd hole to force a playoff.
McIlroy is amongst a stacked field at the Wells Fargo Championship this week as he looks to fine-tune his preparations ahead of the second major of the year.
The PGA Championship is typically dubbed the hardest field in golf, with bundles of major pedigree throughout the renewal.
However, there’s every chance of an in-form player – yet to win a major – lifting the Wanamaker Trophy.
Here, The Golfing Gazette has named three PGA Tour stars who have every chance of ending their major wait at Valhalla.
1. Max Homa

Homa’s performance at Augusta is arguably enough to suggest he’s got a strong case of competing next week.
Taking Scottie Scheffler’s dominant performance out of the equation, Homa was one of the standout players and perhaps unfortunate to finish so far adrift of the eventual winning score.
The 33-year-old demonstrated that he can mix it with the best in the world at the start of April and stands every chance of landing his first major here.

2. Xander Schauffele

Xander Schauffele is arguably the most in-form player on the PGA Tour. A three-tournament stretch in March and April deserves attention.
The 30-year-old finished T2 at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass before landing solo eighth at Augusta. In between the two events was a T5 finish at the Valspar Championship.
Schauffele finished T18 at the RBC Heritage in what was his most disappointing recent outing. The American has set the bar incredibly high, and even when not at his best, he’s still posting good results.
Definitely one to watch at Valhalla as he hunts down his first major victory.

3. Patrick Cantlay

Eight-time PGA Tour winner Patrick Cantlay is still awaiting his first 2024 win and could end his wait for a major.
An eye-catching T3 finish at Hilton Head on 15 under is the standout recent performance for the 32-year-old. Other notable finishes this season include T4 at the Genesis Invitational and a top-25 at The Masters, which, considering the conditions, is commendable.
An attribute which could give Cantlay an edge is his ability to deal with pressure. As we saw at the 2023 Ryder Cup, the 32-year-old can deliver when the rest of the world is seemingly against him.
A positive performance at Quail Hollow could set the American up nicely ahead of the PGA.
