Rory McIlroy has shared three things he really loves about Quail Hollow ahead of the Wells Fargo Championship this week.

The four-day event – which doesn’t include a cut – is the final chance for the world’s best to fine-tune their games ahead of the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Four-time major winner McIlroy is returning to a venue where he has enjoyed plenty of success in the past.

The 34-year-old has won three times at the Wells Fargo, with his most recent victory coming in 2021. Furthermore, the Charlotte track was the scene of McIlroy’s first PGA Tour win back in 2010.

His 2015 triumph was his most eye-catching, sealing the title by seven strokes on 21-under-par.

Speaking to NBC [via Yahoo Sports] on Tuesday, McIlroy has tried to explain why he’s had so much success at the Charlotte venue.

“It’s hard for me to come here and not have high expectations because of my history here and how well I’ve played,” he explained.

The Northern Irishman went on to reveal that his love for Quail Hollow, in turn, helps his game.

He added: “I love the golf course, I love the area, I love the Harris family. Regardless of the expectations I have coming into this event, I know that I am going to have a good week because of the history I’ve had here, the rapport I’ve built up with the fans and the community and the support I get. All of that helps me play better golf, so it sort of goes hand in hand.”

Wells Fargo Championship is the ideal PGA Championship preparation for Rory McIlroy

McIlroy couldn’t have picked a better schedule ahead of the year’s second major at Valhalla.

He’s returning to a venue where he’s had massive success in the past and is coming off a victory at the Zurich Classic. Of course, his form overall has hardly been electric, but there is an opportunity for him to really lay down a marker ahead of the PGA Championship.

McIlroy must demonstrate to the golfing world that he can compete with Scottie Scheffler and potentially Brooks Koepka in Louisville next week.

Scheffler – should he play – is the overwhelming favourite to land his third major title. It was always going to take an elite player like McIlroy to topple the dominant American.

Another positive outing at Quail Hollow will undoubtedly see the Northern Irishman earmarked as Scheffler’s main competition.
